I cannot speak for the President’s personal religious views. You asked whether Islam is “so bad?” I am not an expert on Islam (although I am now reading what I can). Sorry but I believe that’s a superficial question. For now, I only know that a group of people who call themselves Muslim, hate non-Muslim countries so much, that they attack western nations and yell the word “Allah” while murdering thousands of innocent people. War is one thing, but steering civilian planes into buildings is the slaughter of true innocents…
History is filled with examples of religion being warped & abused to justify doing very bad things by very bad people all in God’s name. Rather than “compete” for who misused God’s name the most, historically, let’s focus on the real issue – what is happening TODAY.
We KNOW there’s a group of people who murder with pride, while yelling “Allah is great!” and they ARE attacking people in several countries, (e.g., Madrid, London, Nairobi, etc). The reasons given are vague and hate filled. I used to wonder what POLICY we could change to “comply” with their wishes, and make them like us. But THEY themselves state that THEIR GOAL is to “Destroy Satan America” and “WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH”. Oh, okay. No problem. Some of the Taliban and Al Queda members have taped messages saying we can “abandon Israil and convert to Islam, or die” and they cited the Koran as their justification. Yeah, we love converstion by the sword…
I don’t believe these fanatics are representative of most of Islam. But I AM concerned that an understandable fear of reprisal keeps the moderate Muslims from speaking out against such hateful violence. (Remember the cartoonist who was murdered for depicting Islam as a violent religion…no irony there). I worry that too many in this country won’t face the truth; that some people really hate us for our freedoms, (what they call “decadence”) and use us as a target for their own disappointment and rage. Their leaders cultivate that hatred of America to keep the focus off their poor leadership and terrible economies.
If we continue to try and appease, what are we showing THEM? And why? It has not gotten us anywhere so far. Regardless of your feelings about war in Iraq, the fact is that Taliban/Al Queda terror camps train their men to attack our soldiers there. As a veteran with a brother over there, yes I CARE about our soldiers. And I’m grateful to them b/c the fact is, I’d rather have the “bad guys” attacking our soldiers THERE, who are armed and volunteered to take this risk, than see our civilian planes crashed into our buidings and fields in America (or subways in Madrid or London, or embassies in Kenya, or ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS in Chechnya), and killing thousands of innocents. Did you know that ALL those attacks I just mentioned were done by Muslims who are loosely affiliated with each other? I found that fact VERY disturbing. I didn’t want to believe it.
But I am not interested in being “politically correct” if it means being blind to reality. Remember GERMANY– MANY people refused to believe concentration camps existed, let alone what their real purpose was. There were people all over Europe and America who could not accept the truth of what Hitler was planning and doing.
History is repeating itself. I don’t know if it’s arrogance or naivete or both, but it’s as if we just cannot believe that there are still people in this time, so filled with hate of US, and OUR ways, that they’d do these things…but they are real. We are dealing with terrorists who kill small children, and film the slow beheadings of journalists on the internet and even killed the Director of CARE, who lived in Iraq for 30 years and was married to an Iraquis (Muslim).
I fear that our discussions of “tougher sanctions” and “intense diplomacy” are probably laughable to them. So far, also, useless. And I pray that President Obama “gets” this. B/C I think that a lot of liberals are so arrogant they believe if Osama Bin Laden meets THEM, it’ll ALL be different. But they forget the 5 attacks during the 8 Clinton years…BEFORE 9-11, and the very same group who bombed the WTC in 1993 under Clinton’s watch, AND did it again on 9-11, 2001. Don’t forget that. Conservative or liberal, we have to agree that keeping us safe AND free are things worth killing and dying for.
Hey, I’m not interested in ad hominem attacks, but would like actual discussion on ISSUES raised. Serious debate is needed.
